5 out of 5 stars Great NV Scope   January 1, 2010

This includes the detachable IR illuminator and batteries for this and the scope. I have owned the MK350 for one month and have hunted coyotes with it three times and trialed it numerous times at night in the back yard. I did use the scope with IR illuminator in my basement with all lighting off and could make out detail on most of the items laying around. There are seperate power switches on the scope for unit power and also reticle power, which saves battery life when using just for viewing. I sighted in the rifle (.243) during the day with the lens cover on and was able to get a nice grouping. With the snow on the ground I have not had to use the IR illuminator while hunting as the image quality is amazing without it. I set up a fox and rabbit decoy in a field at 50 yards and was able to make out all the details and this was without using the IR illuminator. I am now going to buy a seperate NV monocular as holding the rifle to search the horizon gets tiring. When I purchased this there were no reviews posted so I took a chance based on the low price and Amazon's return policy. The only con's I can come up with is the weight of the scope on the rifle when holding it for long periods. Once the snow is gone and I need to hunt using the IR illuminator my opinions might change...but I doubt it.

5 out of 5 stars ATN MK350 Night Vision Scope   January 21, 2010

Nicely packaged and easy to install. I sighted the scope in on an AR-15 A2. I was pleased with the easy to use instructions. Not really knowing what to expect, I waited per the instructions for the sun to set, then began sighting the scope. When it became completely dark, I did have a hard time seeing the target. However, the illuminator that mounts on the scope worked exceptionally well. I have not hunted with it yet, but I am more than pleased with its visual performance, its aesthetic appearance, and dimming red cross-hairs. I expect to have many years of night hunting with the MK350.

5 out of 5 stars Appears well built and exceeds Gen 1+ expectations.   July 3, 2010

Right out of the box, this appears to be a well-constructed NVRS. This was a replacement for a Gen II+ NVRS that went no joy after only one year (bad rheostat for intensifier). This item meets what I had in my Gen II+. The reticle is sharp and it 'boxed' accurately at 100m. While 200m appears to be its maximum useful range, it is adequate for a 5.56mm rifle's reach. The scope is nicely packaged and the instructions appear O-1 proof. Even Barney Fife would be hard pressed to insert batteries with the wrong polarity.

The IR illuminator works well. Unlike many of the other NVRS available, the IR illuminator has full adjustment capabilities. The mount is solid and highly adjustable. The retention straps on the day filter, battery cover, and reticle adjustment turrets are VERY much appreciated.

The case leaves a bit to be desired. It is like a cheap bino case or a 1970s Israeli Uzi magazine case. But for less than $400 for the whole megillah, the case is the least weak part of the chain with this item.

LEOs and mil-pers familiar with NVRS of 5-10 years ago will be awed by the capabilities of this item. If I was handed this item for field eval without knowing its origin, I would give it high marks.

Nice job ATN. If the NVRS here is as durable as it was at first light impressions, you have excelled in providing low-cost NVRS to the entry market.

3 out of 5 stars Review - Blog Style (intend to update for a while)   August 7, 2010

08/06/2010 - Received the ATN MK350 in very good condition, well packaged without a lot of extra junk like peanuts and bubble wrap. Unit was supplied with batteries (ATN branded CR123, 2 each), detachable IR illuminator, Allen wrench, tab-wrench (for adjusting the positioning of the IR illuminator), Cordura carrying case w/shoulder strap, and manuals/registration card (no CD instructions, only paper version). There is a screw missing from the panel next to the reticule brightness adjustment knob and the main focus ring feels like it has grit or sand in it. Unless someone reads this and takes their own initiative to remedy these things, I intend to repair/ignore them. The diopter adjustment is smooth without any of this gritty feeling. The rail mount is very solid and serves quite well as a quick removal if you are using it on a rail-equipped weapon. All of the rail hardware is metal and has a very nice fit and finish. It does not scratch or deform the rail on my AR when attaching or removing the scope. There is a re-positionable insert in the rail system for indexing to the "slot" you want to use (should your rail have single or staggered slots). All the user adjustments, battery compartments and the front lens are covered and those covers are tethered to the body of the scope. The eye-relief cup is deep and serves well to keep fingers and stuff away from the rear lens. First impression of the performance was made indoors, comparing to a much inferior "toy" type NV hand-held. Brightness... not so great compared to the "toy", however with the supplied illuminator this becomes a no-problem with image quality making-up for this perception "big time". The image quality is good enough to read a non-illuminated LCD digital clock from 40 feet away (1/2" tall display size on the clock). The cross-hair is adjustable and can be made bright enough to be seen even when the scope is in full saturation, that is "blinded" to the point where the image tube is nothing but a green blob. The lowest setting is just a bit too bright in zero-light conditions and you have to be careful not to look in there after your eye has adjusted to darkness. I keep the cross hair turned-off unless I want it. I bought this scope as a "cross over" device, intending to use it for both hunting and recreational viewing. It will serve -very- well for the hunting part, however I will most likely carry the "toy" around before using the MK350, as the un-assisted image brightness is actually not much better than my own vision... after I have had time to adjust to the light level. The MK350 used as a weapon sight more than compensates for the light-loss of the optics, and with the addition of the illuminator becomes a very good "serious use" tool. In a week I will add to this review... stay tuned! (the "toy" I have is the NEWCON OPTIK SGT-150P StarGate Night Vision Scope, available from Amazon.)
08/07/2010 - Edited for spelling. (not sure if "illuminator" is a proper spelling)
